TCP Performance Degradation of In-Sequence Delivery in LTE Link Layer

چکیده
LTE networks have been rapidly commercialized for 4G cellular communications systems in all over the world as well as Korea. Because many internet applications use TCP as their transport layer protocol, TCP throughput measurements and its performance improvements in LTE networks is very important. In this paper, we analyze the impact of “in-sequence delivery” in LTE link layer on TCP RTT increment. When HARQ or ARQ in LTE link layer is working frequently for error recovery, it increases TCP RTT and decreases TCP throughput seriously. Therefore, in order to get better TCP throughput with the same packet error probability, we should decrease TCP RTT when HARQ or ARQ in LTE link layer is working for error recovery. We propose "out-of-sequence delivery" in LTE link layer in order to decrease TCP RTT. From our test results, "out-of-sequence delivery" outperforms “insequence delivery”. While "out-of-sequence delivery" makes LTE link layer design simpler, but its throughput gain is considerable.

TCP Throughput Improvement over Vertical Handover between 3G LTE and WLAN
We address TCP throughput degradation over vertical handover between 3G-LTE and WLAN. 3G-LTE link layer tries to recover packet loss and deliver recovered packets in-order. This may involve link layer holding packets before later arriving packets arrive, causing spurious timeout. A stateof-the-art scheme holds fast retransmit/recovery for one RTT waiting for packets arriving at TCP layer out of...
متن کاملEvaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures
Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...

In-car Internet access using Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology has become a new trend in the automotive industry to support additional safety applications and enhanced infotainment systems on new vehicles. Car manufacturers may install an LTE modem with a WiFi router in a vehicle in order to provide ubiquitous Internet access to the passengers. However, the performance of the LTE network is ...
متن کاملImproving End-to-End Performance of TCP Using Link-Layer Retransmissions over Mobile Internetworks
TCP does not perform well in networks with high packet error rates, such as those with wireless links, since TCP assumes network congestion to be the major cause for packet losses. Wireless losses make TCP unnecessarily initiate its congestion control mechanism which results in poor performance in the form of low throughput and high interactive delay. We investigate, through computer simulation...
